How Vodafone gets into market more quickly with Figma & FigJam

Vodafone Group Products and Services needed to rethink employee experience when the pandemic forced their design and product teams to work remotely. Ashton Snook, Head of Product Design and UX, and Nick Dutch, Group Head of Digital Channels, were looking for ways to re-energise a team that had previously thrived in an in-person studio. Enter Figma and FigJam.

“I’d always worked in real-world studios prior to 2020 and in those environments there’s a certain energy, a fluidity to the workflow,” says Ashton. “We wanted to replicate that atmosphere of collaboration, communication and community but instead of from a single site, from thousands. We have people in multiple locations, and want to support individual working environments that contribute to a better, more flexible work-life balance. Figma and FigJam help us do that.”

Vodafone’s design and product teams use FigJam for brainstorming, ideating and collating insights, mostly during the discovery and research phases of a project.

“FigJam is a great tool for bringing more people into the process,” says Nick. “It’s become really important when we’re sharing our products or concepts with a wider group of people in multiple countries and for doing presentations.”

Figma, meanwhile, is Vodafone’s core platform for design - bringing designers, UX researchers, product managers, marketing managers and engineering together. “It’s essentially our hub for communication and creativity,” says Ashton. “It helps us replicate that sense of the physical studio, and has helped us produce great work.”

So what are the outcomes? Ashton believes his design team are 20 - 30% more efficient since the switch to Figma and FigJam. Team members can share work more easily, and collaboration is more organic.

And it’s had a business impact, too.

“The combination of Figma and FigJam helps us get products to market more quickly,” says Nick. “It allows people to work in real time - we can get things out more quickly, tested more quickly, and as a consequence we get them into market more quickly.”
